Mobil traces its origins to 1866 with the founding of the Vacuum Oil Company in Rochester, New York — one of the earliest lubricant manufacturers in the U.S. After the breakup of Standard Oil in 1911, Vacuum Oil and Standard Oil of New York (Socony) eventually merged in 1931 to form Socony-Vacuum Oil Company, later rebranded as Mobil Oil Corporation
