Standard Oil was founded in 1870 by John D. Rockefeller in Cleveland, Ohio, and grew to become one of the most powerful corporations in American history. At its height, Standard Oil controlled roughly 90% of U.S. oil refining, making Rockefeller the wealthiest man in the world.
